GST/HST: When Does Your Business Need to Register?

Approaching $30,000 in Taxable Revenue? Know the Rules Before You Cross the Threshold.

Your business is growing.

Sales are coming in, new customers are calling, and revenue is nearing $30,000.

That is good news—but it is also a good time to check your GST/HST position.

For most businesses, the $30,000 small-supplier threshold matters. Waiting until well after you cross it can create unnecessary problems.

The $30,000 Rule

Generally, a business is considered a small supplier if its worldwide taxable supplies, including zero-rated supplies, do not exceed $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or over the last four consecutive calendar quarters.

The calculation can also include taxable supplies made by associated persons, so it is important to know exactly what counts toward your threshold.

If you remain within the small-supplier limit, GST/HST registration is generally not mandatory, although voluntary registration may be available.

Once you exceed the threshold, registration timing depends on how you crossed it.

If You Cross $30,000 in One Calendar Quarter

Business owners need to watch this closely.

If your taxable supplies exceed $30,000 in a single calendar quarter, you generally stop being a small supplier on the sale that takes you over the threshold.

That means GST/HST may apply starting with that sale.

You cannot simply wait until the next month or the next year to start charging tax.

If You Cross $30,000 Over Several Quarters

The timing differs if you exceed $30,000 over the previous four consecutive calendar quarters, not in one quarter.

In that situation, you generally stop being a small supplier at the end of the month following the quarter in which you exceeded the threshold.

Your registration and GST/HST collection obligations then follow from that date.

That is why looking only at your year-to-date sales may not be enough.

Don't Wait Until $30,000 to Start Checking.

If your taxable revenue is already $25,000 or $28,000 and your business is growing, it's time to pay attention.

Review your taxable and zero-rated sales, and sales by calendar quarter. Also check whether associated businesses affect the calculation, and whether upcoming contracts or large invoices could push your quarterly average to the point where registration may become mandatory.

A single large sale could change your position sooner than expected.

What Changes Once You Register?

Once registered, you take on GST/HST responsibilities.

Depending on the transactions involved, that generally means charging and collecting the applicable GST/HST, filing GST/HST returns, and remitting amounts owing to the CRA.

You may also be entitled to claim input tax credits for GST/HST paid or payable on eligible business purchases and expenses used in your commercial activities.

Registration is therefore more than adding tax to an invoice. Your bookkeeping needs to be ready.

Should You Register Before You Reach $30,000?

Sometimes voluntary registration may make sense.

For example, a growing business with significant taxable business expenses may want to consider whether claiming eligible input tax credits is worthwhile.

Once registered, you generally have to charge GST/HST on taxable supplies, keep appropriate records, file returns, and meet your remittance obligations.

Don't register simply because someone told you that every business needs a GST number.

First, understand how the rules apply to your business.

A Feasible Next Step

If your taxable revenue is getting close to $30,000, don't wait until after you cross the threshold.

Check your numbers now.

Ask:

How much taxable revenue have we earned in each calendar quarter?

How close are we to $30,000?

Do we have a large invoice or contract coming up?

If registration becomes mandatory, when do we need to start charging GST/HST?

Review your sales volume now to avoid a much harder conversation later about GST/HST you should have collected but didn't.
