Term vs. Permanent Life Insurance
Lower premium—or lifetime protection?

That is often how people compare term and permanent life insurance.
But price alone does not answer the most important question:
What do you need the insurance to do?
Term and permanent insurance serve different needs.
Understanding that difference can make the decision much clearer.
Term life insurance: coverage for a defined period
Term insurance provides coverage for a specific period, such as 10 or 20 years, or sometimes to a specified age.
It can make sense when the financial need itself has a time limit.
For example:
· replacing income while children are dependent
· covering a mortgage
· protecting the family during working years
· covering a business loan or other temporary obligation
Term insurance generally starts with a lower premium than permanent insurance for a comparable amount of coverage.
But the coverage has a term.
If you want to continue it after that period, renewal premiums may be considerably higher, depending on the policy. Coverage may eventually end at a specified age.
Permanent life insurance: coverage intended to last for life
Permanent life insurance is designed to provide lifetime coverage as long as the policy remains in force and its requirements are met.
Depending on the policy type, it may also include a cash-value component.
Permanent coverage may be considered where the insurance need itself is expected to remain for life.
Examples could include:
· final expenses
· leaving a legacy
· certain estate-planning needs
· long-term family needs
· certain business or succession-planning purposes
Because permanent coverage is designed differently and may include additional features, premiums are generally higher than initial term insurance premiums.
A simple comparison
Term Insurance
Best understood as coverage for a period when the financial risk is especially high.
Think:
“If something happens to me during these years, what needs to be protected?”
Permanent Insurance
Designed for needs expected to continue throughout life.
Think:
“Is there a financial need I expect to exist whenever I die?”
Neither question automatically leads to the same answer for everyone.
Sometimes the answer is both.
Insurance planning does not always have to be “term or permanent.”
A family might have a large temporary need while children are young and the mortgage is high, plus a smaller need expected to remain throughout life.
Depending on the person's circumstances and budget, different types or layers of coverage may be considered for different purposes.
The important point is that each piece of coverage should have a reason.
Don't compare premiums without comparing the purpose.
A lower premium is attractive, but price is only one part of the decision.
Before choosing a policy, ask:
How long do I need the coverage?
What financial problem is insurance intended to solve?
How much coverage do I actually need?
What premium can I reasonably maintain?
Do I need coverage for a temporary obligation or a lifelong one?
Those questions are more useful than starting with a product name.
Your Next Step
Before choosing a policy, clarify why you want life insurance in the first place.
Try putting that reason into one simple sentence. For example:
“I want enough coverage to help support my family while my children still depend on us and until most of our mortgage is paid off.”
A clear purpose gives you a better starting point for deciding how much coverage you need and how long you may need it.
Or:
“I want a certain amount available whenever I die to help with final expenses and leave money to my family.”
Once the purpose is clear, comparing term and permanent coverage becomes much easier.
The right policy starts with the purpose—not the product.
